Kiyomizu-dera

커다란 느티나무 기둥이 받치는 무대 위에 못 하나 쓰지 않고 산비탈 너머로 지어진 유네스코 세계문화유산 목조 사찰 — 단풍철과 벚꽃철에 특히 아름다운, 교토를 대표하는 풍경 중 하나다. 이름은 본당 아래 오토와 폭포에서 유래한 것으로 '맑은 물'을 뜻한다.

Open roughly 6:00–18:00 daily (hours extend for seasonal night illuminations); admission is around ¥500, cash preferred. It's a steep uphill approach from the Higashiyama lanes, so budget extra time and wear comfortable shoes. Go early in the morning to beat both the crowds and the tour buses; this is one of Kyoto's busiest sights.
