Best Day Trips from Kyoto

Nara: Deer Park & Todai-ji

Japan's first permanent capital, about 35–55 minutes from Kyoto on the Kintetsu Nara Line, depending on the train. Over 1,200 free-roaming sacred deer wander Nara Park, bowing for the deer crackers (shika senbei) sold on-site. Walk on to Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall (the world's largest wooden building, housing a 15-metre bronze Buddha) and Kasuga Taisha, with its thousands of stone and bronze lanterns. A full day is comfortable; a rushed half-day is possible if you stick to the park and Todai-ji alone.

Uji: Matcha & Byodo-in Temple

Japan's most famous matcha-producing region, just 15–20 minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line. Byodo-in Temple's Phoenix Hall, the building depicted on the ¥10 coin, sits reflected in its own pond, one of the most photographed buildings in Japan. Afterward, walk the main street's historic tea houses for a matcha tasting set, or the riverside path along the Uji River. Half a day is enough; easy to pair with a Kyoto morning or afternoon.

Getting There

Both trips run on regular commuter rail lines with no reservation needed. Buy a ticket at the station machine or tap an IC card (ICOCA/Suica) at the gates. Neither requires a car. If you're short on time, Uji is the faster round trip; Nara rewards a full day.

Kyoto to Nara runs ¥760 one-way on the Kintetsu Nara Line (about 35–55 minutes, depending on the train); Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall adds ¥800 on top of Nara Park's free entry (deer crackers are a small extra). Kyoto to Uji is ¥240 one-way on the JR Nara Line (about 17 minutes), and Byodo-in Temple's admission is ¥700. Factor in round-trip fare, one admission ticket, and a casual lunch, and budget roughly ¥2,400–2,700 per person for a day in Uji, or ¥3,500–3,800 for a day in Nara.
